Senator Ernst, Hinson, Young, Miller-Meeks, and Feenstra have refused to answer if they support the GOP lawsuit that could repeal coverage protections for pre-existing conditions, undo Iowa’s Medicaid Expansion

Today, following news that the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the GOP’s dangerous lawsuit to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act just one week after Election Day, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Mark Smith released the following statement:

“Make no mistake – Iowa Republican candidates are terrified that health care will be on the ballot this November, which is why they’re cowering from Iowa voters and refusing to take action against their party’s reckless effort to strip health care from nearly a quarter-million Iowans amid a pandemic,” said Mark Smith, Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party. “Senator Ernst, Ashley Hinson, David Young, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and Randy Feenstra must end their election-year political games and immediately denounce the GOP’s anti-ACA lawsuit.”

If successful, the GOP’s lawsuit could repeal coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, dismantle Iowa’s Medicaid expansion, slash back open the Medicare donut hole, and rip coverage away from Iowans during a global health crisis.

Senator Ernst has silently stood behind the GOP’s lawsuit for nearly a year, telling reporters, “I’m not saying whether I support it or not.” However, she repeatedly voted to enable insurers to “charge more to those with pre-existing health conditions” and has spent years trying and failing to undermine the ACA through legislation.

GOP congressional candidates Hinson, Young, Miller-Meeks, and Feenstra are all fluent in the Republicans’ partisan attacks on health care but have yet to say whether they oppose this lawsuit that could threaten health coverage for more than million Iowans. During his time in Congress, Young even voted to repeal the ACA in its entirety.
