Trump and GOP Seek to Suppress Iowa Voters During Global Pandemic

Trump and Republican leaders are desperately trying to make it harder for Iowans to vote-by-mail as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on

DES MOINES  — With less than 100 days left until the November election, President Trump and the Iowa GOP are trying yet another shameful tactic to suppress Iowa voters.

This new attack — following record-breaking turnout in this year’s primary election where all voters received absentee ballot requests by mail — is Trump’s latest attempt to make it harder for Iowans to vote as he continuously slips in the polls. Bipartisan county auditors oppose this change and agree it will slow their ability to process mail-in ballots during coronavirus, as well as potentially increase the risk some voters will not get their ballots in time.

“While Iowa Democrats are focused on making voting accessible and safe for everyone, Trump and the Iowa GOP are doing exactly the opposite by trying to rip away absentee voting protections during a global pandemic,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Mark Smith. “Iowa Democrats stand with LULAC and their work to make it easier for Iowans to vote. This desperate attempt at voter suppression proves yet again that the GOP and Trump are terrified of being held accountable by Iowa voters.”
