Yesterday, at an event on college affordability of all places, Governor Reynolds actually told Iowa’s Regents Universities that they should hike up tuition in light of the Reynolds Budget Crisis, a move that would put higher education further out of reach for hardworking Iowa families.

Answering a question on her budget crisis’ impact on higher education funding, Reynolds said that universities should “put forth a reasonable increase,” in their tuition levels.

Just yesterday, the Presidents of Iowa’s universities told the state Board of Regents that they had already cut between $55 and $60 million to avoid tuition hikes, but that the Reynolds Budget Crisis leaves them forced to raise tuition to maintain educational quality.

“Governor Reynolds’ demand that Iowa families solve the Reynolds Budget Crisis through tuition hikes at our public universities shows yet again that she is putting politics ahead of people,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price. “We cannot afford Governor Reynolds’ passing the costs of her fiscal mismanagement onto hardworking Iowans. Voters will remember Reynolds’ push for tuition increases and misplaced priorities when they head to the polls next year.”
