Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart Statement on Vivek Campaigning In Iowa

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart issued the following statement on Vivek Ramaswamy’s visit to Iowa:

“Vivek Ramaswamy fits in well with the Iowa GOP as they both think they should tell women what health care access can be available to them. As Vivek campaigns here, Iowans need to know that he believes abortions should be banned before many women even know they’re pregnant- just as Iowa Republicans try to force through another deeply unpopular, cruel abortion ban after it was rejected by the state Supreme Court. Vivek isn’t an anomaly in the 2024 race to the bottom — no matter which extreme candidate comes out of this Republican field, it’s a certainty that they’re going to be trying to strip these fundamental rights away from women nationwide.”

As a reminder, Vivek and the entire 2024 Republican field have pushed an extreme, anti-choice agenda:

  • Donald Trump laid the groundwork for a national ban by appointing three of the right-wing Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe, and called for “some form of punishment” for women who have abortions.

  • Ron DeSantis signed extreme legislation that bans abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant.

  • Vivek Ramaswamy supports six-week abortion bans and called the one DeSantis signed “reasonable.”

  • Tim Scott cosponsored multiple abortion bans and vowed to sign “the most conservative” national abortion ban possible if elected.

  • Nikki Haley said she would support a national abortion ban after signing an abortion ban in SC that had no exceptions for rape or incest and threatened doctors with jail time.

  • Mike Pence called for banning abortion in every state and supports outlawing medication abortion.

  • Chris Christie backed a federal ban and worked with Susan B. Anthony List to coordinate efforts to restrict abortion in every state.

  • Doug Burgum signed one of the strictest abortion bans in the country as North Dakota governor, with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest after six weeks.

  • Asa Hutchinson signed one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, with no exceptions for rape or incest, and supports a national ban.
