As Capital City Pride weekend kicks off in Des Moines, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price issued the following statement in honor of Pride Month:

“Pride Month is not just a time to celebrate the LGBTQ community and the tremendous progress we’ve made, but also to renew our commitment to fight for full, lived equality.

“This year is a special year as Iowa reaches ten years of marriage equality. Eric and I are thrilled to be celebrating this historic milestone with loving same-sex couples across the state.

“But our work didn’t stop — and will not stop — at marriage. Just this year, Kim Reynolds and the GOP-controlled legislature unleashed a new round of attacks on the queer and trans community, not the least of which was legislation that prohibits gender confirming surgery for Iowans on Medicaid. We stand with our partners at the ACLU in their lawsuit to overturn this hateful and unconstitutional attack.

“Attacks are also coming from the federal level, too. The Trump Administration has made every aspect of the LGBTQ community’s lives more unsafe — from cutting Title IX funding in our schools, to the ban on brave transgender Americans serving in the military, and more.

“This Pride Month, we ask that you take time to celebrate but also join us in fighting until we reach full, lived equality.”
