IDP Chair Rita Hart on Scott, Pence, Ramaswamy Visiting Iowa This Week

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart released the following statement ahead of Tim Scott, Mike Pence, and Vivek Ramaswamy traveling to Iowa over the next two days.

“This week some of the most extreme, MAGA presidential contenders are headed back to our state and pushing an agenda that is wildly out of touch with the majority of Iowans. While President Biden continues building the economy from the bottom up and middle out, Scott, Pence, Ramaswamy, and the other GOP candidates are focused on out-MAGAing each other with fringe policies and repealing the lifesaving provisions Democrats have delivered. The contrast couldn’t be clearer between the Biden-Harris administration lowering costs for Iowa families and MAGA Republicans fighting to increase costs on working people in favor of the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.”

As a reminder, Mike Pence, Tim Scott, and Vivek Ramaswamy are some of the most extreme MAGA candidates in the field:

Tim Scott:

  • Scott has vowed to sign “the most conservative pro-life legislation that they can get through Congress” if elected president.

  • Scott supported Paul Ryan’s plans to end Medicare and Social Security as we know them.

  • Scott described himself as “one of the architects” of Trump’s 2017 tax giveaways that gifted corporations billions.

Vivek Ramaswamy

  • Ramaswamy recently said that “Our goal should not be for Putin to lose,” and pushed for giving major parts of Ukraine to Russia.

  • Ramaswamy has expressed support for some of the most extreme abortion bans in the country.

  • He has also called the climate change agenda a “hoax” and wrongly said that more people are “dying of bad climate change policies than they are of actual climate change.”

  • Ramaswamy has pushed fringe conspiracy theories about 9/11 and January 6.

Mike Pence

  • Pence was among the first Republicans to call for a national abortion ban after Roe v. Wade was overturned and also wants to ban medication abortion.

  • Pence has called for ending Medicare as we know it and privatizing Social Security, putting the benefits Iowans have worked so hard for at risk.

  • Pence seeks to make the Trump-Pence tax giveaways for the ultra-wealthy permanent.

  • Under the last administration, the Trump-Pence agenda ravaged Iowa’s farms causing average farm income to fall to near 15-year lows.
