Today, U.S. Senator and former Planned Parenthood executive Tina Smith joined an Iowa Democratic Party press call with IDP Chair Rita Hart ahead of Donald Trump’s visit to Iowa and 2024 Republicans gathering at the FAMILY Leader Forum this weekend. Sen. Smith and Chair Hart slammed Donald Trump for paving the way for abortion bans across the country and the national abortion ban that 2024 MAGA Republican candidates are now running on as they rub shoulders with the FAMiLY Leader group – one of the most extreme, anti-abortion groups in the country.

“So this week, Republican candidates for president will gather in Iowa for a forum and Donald Trump will also be in the state, as you know. But whether they participate in this forum or not, one thing will be abundantly clear: All of the Republican candidates for president celebrated overturning Roe. None of them will protect access to health care for women, including abortion care,” said U.S. Senator Tina Smith. “All of these candidates are in the same bucket. Ask any of these candidates if they would commit to vetoing a national ban on abortion, and you will see what I mean. None of them will be able to say that.”
“The only reason women in Iowa and across the country are gripping with this reality is because Donald Trump appointed the justices that overturned Roe v. Wade. In Iowa, the FAMiLY Leader Group has done everything in their power to strip away reproductive rights from women. When our state Supreme Court blocked the last six-week ban from going into effect, Bob Vander Plaats called for the justices to be impeached. These people will not stop until a national abortion ban is reality. And now, we see Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, and Vivek Ramaswamy tripping over each other in hopes that they will be extreme enough to earn his endorsement,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “It’s no wonder that these folks are all playing footsie with one of the most extreme anti-abortion groups in the country.”
