“This partisan lawsuit is a malicious, cowardly effort by the Republican Party to disenfranchise voters and subvert the voice of Iowans in November”

Following today’s ruling in favor of a Linn County GOP lawsuit that would invalidate 50,000 absentee ballots, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Mark Smith released the following statement:

“Today’s ruling undermines our fundamental right to vote, and if allowed to stand will make it more difficult for thousands of Iowans to safely vote by mail during this pandemic. While the Democratic Party explores legal avenues to overturn this ruling, what’s clear is that this partisan lawsuit is a malicious, cowardly effort by the Republican Party to disenfranchise voters and subvert the voice of Iowans in November.

“President Trump, Senator Ernst, and the Iowa Republican Party are terrified of standing on their record of broken promises. From gutting the U.S. Postal Service and banning absentee ballot drop boxes, to legally undermining our election system, the GOP is working tirelessly to make it less safe to vote during a global pandemic.

“In the meantime, the Iowa Democratic Party’s efforts to expand access to voting, register new voters, and promote absentee ballot use in the election will continue at a break-neck pace as we virtually organize in every corner of the state. One way or another, we are committed to ensuring that Iowans across the spectrum have the power to make their voices heard in November.”
