Senator Ernst Stays Silent as the Administration Refuses to Reopen Iowa’s Health Care Exchange, Leaving Scores of Iowans Uninsured and At Health and Financial Risk

It’s hard to picture a more callous response from Senator Joni Ernst as an unprecedented health and economic crisis has forced over 100,000 Iowans out of work and left the nearly 150,000 Iowans without health insurance at grave risk.

The Trump Administration is refusing to reopen Iowa’s insurance marketplace to enable uninsured Iowans to gain health coverage and protect their families from this deadly pandemic. Senator Ernst’s response? Silence.

Adding to the crisis, the GOP is “plowing ahead” with their lawsuit to repeal the entire Affordable Care Act – an effort Senator Ernst has refused to condemn that would leave hundreds of thousands more Iowans without affordable health coverage and push rural hospitals to the brink of closure.

“Thousands of Iowans are unprotected, uninsured, or at fatal risk amid this growing pandemic. Despite the enormous power Senator Ernst has to push for urgent relief, she refuses to act. Thousands of Iowans are being left susceptible to an unprecedented health crisis, and Senator Ernst should be ashamed she doesn’t have it in her to stand up to her own party and fight for Iowans,” said Jeremy Busch, Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson.
