Before Tonight’s IA-03 Debate, A Reminder: David Young Voted Repeatedly to Gut Care for Iowans
DES MOINES – Heading into the 3rd congressional district debate tonight, rejected Congressman David Young is desperately trying to re-write his record on health care. But the facts speak for themselves: David Young has never stood up for Iowans’ health care. As a member of Congress, Young repeatedly voted for legislation that would completely gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, privatize Medicare, raise premiums on working Iowa families, and force seniors to pay thousands more for their prescription drugs.
“Failed Congressman David Young would like nothing more than to mislead Iowans on his health care record because even he knows that his time in Congress was disastrous for the lives and livelihoods of Iowans,” said IDP spokesperson Sam Kennedy. “He voted repeatedly to repeal the ACA and strip away coverage from folks with pre-existing conditions, and that’s exactly why Iowans voted him out in 2018. His vote for the tax scam gave permanent tax breaks to corporations at the expense of working Iowans and started the crusade to gut the ACA in the courts. Now Young has no message or plan for Iowans and is running on the same failed record. Iowans will reject him again on Election Day.”
Ahead of tonight’s debate, here are the facts on rejected Congressman David Young’s dangerous record on health care:
-
In 2015, David Young voted to strip away protections for Iowans with pre-existing conditions – without any plan to replace them – and increase Iowa seniors’ drug costs by an average of $2,272.
-
In 2017 – after pledging to oppose a Republican health care bill that would have removed pre-existing condition protections, created an age tax, and raised premiums on Iowa families – Young sold out his constituents when his party bosses threatened to pull their financial support from his flailing re-election bid.
-
Young voted for multiple federal budgets that would privatize Medicare and turn it into a voucher program – breaking the promise of care to Iowa’s seniors.
-
Young has voiced his belief that women who are survivors of rape or incest should not have access to abortions or the full range of reproductive health care.
-
Young’s voting record also includes supporting legislation that denies women access to contraception and life-saving cancer screenings.
