Why Isn’t Governor Kim Reynolds Fighting for Rural Iowa?

Farmers across Iowa are bracing for the devastation brought by Trump’s trade war. Newspapers across the state are filled with stories about farmers who are facing dramatically lower prices as a result of Donald Trump’s ill-conceived trade war.

Now is a time that rural Iowa needs a leader. Unfortunately, they are not getting any leadership on this issue from the Governor’s Office.

Governor Kim Reynolds, who has previously said that she was “grateful” to President Trump whom she called “an ally and friend,” has not taken real action in the four days since Trump’s trade policies led to a retaliation that has specifically targeted Iowa.

“Time and again, Governor Reynolds has ignored the plight of Iowans, but this time it is simply stunning. Rural communities were already hurting and this is a gut punch, yet all Governor Reynolds has given them is words,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price.

“Has she called President Trump and made clear the damage that is happening here in Iowa? What plans is she putting in place now to help support rural areas who will be hurt by this?  Will she actually hold Trump accountable for this mess or will she abandon rural communities? Governor Reynolds must make clear whether or not she is willing to stand up for rural communities, or is more interested in protecting her ‘friend’ in the White House.”
