Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price released the following statement today in response to the decision by Senate Republicans to drop a measure that would have restored voting rights for felons who have served their full sentences:
“Instead of listening to the majority of Iowans who support restoring rights to felons after they have completed their sentences, Senate Republicans would rather perpetuate disenfranchisement with political games that restrict Iowans’ ability to participate in our democracy.
“Simply put: Iowans should not be treated like second-class citizens if they have served their time. If Governor Reynolds is serious about restoring voting rights for Iowans who deserve a second chance, she should immediately sign an executive order and restore the right to vote for felons.
“Our fight is not over. This overwhelming bipartisan proposal initially passed the House by a 95-2 vote and Democrats will continue to work across the aisle to expand access to the ballot on Election Day.”
