Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart Issues Statement on Iowa’s Six-Week Abortion Ban Going Into Effect

Des Moines, IA — Today, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart issued the following statement regarding Iowa’s six-week abortion ban taking effect:

“Today is a sad day for women and families all over Iowa. A draconian abortion ban has now officially taken effect. As you know, this ban takes away a fundamental freedom that Iowa women have maintained for more than 50 years. Women in Iowa have now lost the ability to make critical medical decisions that impact their health and the health of their families.

Every single Iowan should be concerned about this law. Essentially what Kim Reynolds, Brenna Bird and the Republicans have done – is practice medicine without a license. They think that the Government – not women – knows what’s best for themselves and their families.

Let’s be clear: Iowa Democrats believe that politicians should stay out of women’s doctor’s appointments. We believe that healthcare providers should be making healthcare decisions – not lawmakers. We believe that having the ability to make decisions about your own body is at the heart of what it means to be free in a democratic society.”
