Bird Announced Her Office Won’t Help Rape Victims Access Abortions
DES MOINES — On Friday, Brenna Bird announced her office is permanently ending the Iowa Attorney General’s tradition of reimbursing women who have been sexually assaulted for abortions – going beyond federal law and even Iowa’s six-week abortion ban.
“Brenna Bird is refusing to help women who have been raped. Haven’t these women been violated enough?” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “We need to help victims of violent crimes, not punish them or force them to find alternative and oftentimes unsafe ways to access the care they need.”
