The State Central Committee of the Iowa Democratic Party today passed the following resolution:

Whereas, The Iowa Democratic Party stands proudly with our union brothers and sisters today as part of the National Working People’s Day of Action.

Whereas, This Day of Action comes one year, one week, and one day after the Republican-Controlled Legislature and Republican Governor passed dangerous changes to Iowa’s collective bargaining laws that stripped the voice of 181,000 public workers from their workplace, eliminated protections for workers injured on the job, and prohibited project labor agreements; and

Whereas, that legislation was designed to destroy unions in Iowa, but instead only made them stronger with 96% of public sector unions re-certifying in 2017, as well as hundreds of union members and union-backed candidates being elected to school boards and municipal office; and

Whereas, now at the national level public, sector unions are once again facing threat from the Right with the Supreme Court to hear arguments this Monday on the Janus case, which will adjudicate a National Right-To-Work-For-Less law across the United States for public sector unions.

Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Iowa Democratic Party will always stand in solidarity with our Union brothers and sisters against any attack from those who wish to take away union rights, and will never back down from the fight:

  • For freedom for Iowans to come together in strong unions,
  • For equitable pay,
  • For affordable health care,
  • For quality schools,
  • For vibrant communities,
  • For a secure future for all of us,

And, ask that all Iowans join with us in this fight so that together we can protect the voice of working men and women and create a better future for all Iowans.
