The Iowa Democratic Party is hiring a Deputy Voter Protection Director for our 2026 coordinated campaign. Iowa is a pivotal battleground for Democrats this election cycle and the Voter Protection Team will play a critical role in ensuring that every eligible Iowa voter is able to cast a ballot that will count.
The Deputy Voter Protection Director will work closely with the Voter Protection Director to: 1) ensure that election administrators across the state facilitate voting according to law; 2) recruit, train and manage voter protection volunteers for our Election Administration and Poll Observation programs; 3) monitor and analyze changes to election laws, regulations and procedures to identify and address barriers to voting.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with management of our volunteer-driven election administration program, including recruiting and training volunteer liaisons to build relationships with county auditors; monitoring liaison reporting systems and issue-resolution processes by implementing strong and consistent data practices; assist in efforts to expand voting access across priority counties.
- Communicate directly with county auditors and other election officials as needed to address voting and election issues and advocate for timely pro-voter resolutions to issues.
- Prepare regular reports for national partners.
- Assist with the planning and execution of poll observer and boiler room operations for early voting and election day.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Voter Protection Director.
Skills and Qualifications
- We are seeking someone who is highly motivated to get Democrats elected and defend democracy – a strategic and creative problem-solver who is eager to work diligently and collaboratively to create meaningful and lasting change for Iowans.
- JD strongly preferred.
- One or more cycles of campaign experience working in a voter protection or organizing role, or some combination of comparable political, voter protection, organizing, advocacy or nonprofit experience.
- Experience using LBJ, VAN/Votebuilder, Google Suite products.
- Strong communication and organizational skills to facilitate communication with staff, county election officials, volunteers and partner organizations.
- Proven time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in order to meet deadlines.
- This position is full-time and lasts through November 2026. Applicants must have a reliable laptop, cell phone, and vehicle. Applicants must also be comfortable working irregular hours including nights and weekends.
Compensation and Location
- Salary $7000 per month with health benefits.
- This position is full time and based in Des Moines, Iowa.
