Zach Lahn Will Continue Kim Reynolds’ Billion Dollar Budget Deficit and Jack Up the Sales Tax
CEDAR RAPIDS – On the debate stage, Kansas carpetbagger and career political operative Zach Lahn is making it clear he wants to continue Kim Reynolds’ billion dollar budget deficit that threatens funding for schools, health care, and law enforcement. He has defended Reynolds’ budget crisis, saying that it “really put us on good financial footing.”
Lahn also wants to raise taxes on hardworking Iowans. He has endorsed a plan to jack up the sales tax twice in the last month, saying that “a 2.5 cent increase in the sales tax … is one option” that “he believes most people would prefer.” Lahn’s tax hike would raise costs on everything — including gas, groceries, and utilities — and would hit working families the hardest.
Here’s what you need to know about Lahn running to continue Reynolds’ billion dollar budget deficit:
- October 6: “When Governor Branstad came out of retirement and ran for governor again … his leadership, and through the leadership of Kim Reynolds, really put us on good financial footing.”
- June 30: “The economy will rebound. This is cyclical … I think the governor of Iowa did the right thing.”
- January 27: “The state is spending too much money on education.”

- Layoffs in Iowa hit a one-year high this summer, and over 12,700 Iowans have been laid off in the past year.
- Iowa farmers are struggling under the weight of a four-year downturn and filing for bankruptcy at the highest rate in the nation.
