RECAP: Ahead of Trump Rally, Iowa Farmers Called Out Ashley Hinson for Raising Costs During Harvest
VAN METER – Today in Van Meter, farmers came together ahead of President Trump’s Iowa rally boosting a desperate Ashley Hinson to call out Hinson’s seven votes to continue the war in Iran and five votes to keep in place the tariffs, which are jacking up their costs during harvest.
Today’s event continues the “Hinson’s Gain, Iowa’s Pain” statewide tour.
Key context: Hinson cast her seventh vote to continue the war in Iran just weeks ago as it devastated Iowa with “record diesel prices,” “surg[ing]” gas costs, fertilizer prices “near peak levels,” and inflation higher than the national average. She has repeatedly defended the war in Iran and downplayed the impact on Iowans, calling it “out of sight, out of mind” as Iowans struggle to pay their bills. ” She has raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars from Big Oil, and now those companies are seeing record profits up to $14 billion from the Iran war.
Meanwhile she has voted five times to keep in place chaotic tariffs and defended them repeatedly in public even as Iowa farmers warned that they’re facing “some of their toughest times since the 1980s crisis.”
“Then came the war with Iran and the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz,” said Ryan Marquardt, Madison County Farmer. “Hinson has had multiple opportunities to vote to remove American forces from hostilities, and she’s voted no. The consequences aren’t theoretical here, they show up on our fuel tanks. I recently paid $5.45 for off-road diesel. A year ago, I would have been paying under $4.”
“Ashley Hinson has repeatedly supported the Trump administration’s tariff policies,” said Ellen Walsh-Rosmann, Shelby County Farmer. “Then we’re told not to worry because the administration will provide another bailout, but why should farmers have to absorb the damage from policies that create economic uncertainty and then depend on emergency payments to help us survive? A bailout doesn’t restore a lost market. It doesn’t give us back the money we’ve spent, and it doesn’t give us the confidence to make next year’s decisions. Ashley Hinson’s gain is Iowa’s pain.”
“What’s disappointed me with Ashley Hinson and other politicians right now is the fact that instead of thinking of others and placing others above themselves, they’re self-serving and taking care of their own interests,” said Seth Watkins, Page County Farmer. “That’s not what we need to build the state we all love and care so much about. […] I think the most important thing I’ve seen through this whole campaign is electing people who actually care about us, and we have the opportunity to do that in November.”
