REPORT: Zach Lahn Won’t Say Who is Bankrolling His Running Mate’s $900,000 Debt Bailout

Bleeding Heartland: “A high-powered litigation attorney got to work on Wulf’s cases immediately after his political star rose”

DES MOINES – New reporting from Bleeding Heartland reveals that Zach Lahn is refusing to tell Iowans who is paying off his running mate Derek Wulf’s massive debts.

Before joining Lahn’s ticket, Wulf “was in the hole for at least $900,000” and faced “foreclosure and default judgments for multiple creditors seeking repayment of six-figure debts.” Now, Wulf has received a “huge infusion of cash” to pay off his debts, and “an unnamed lender may be willing to refinance the obligations that prompted Wulf’s bank to file a foreclosure petition in May.”

Instead of being transparent with Iowans, Lahn’s campaign is refusing to say who is loaning Wulf money to pay off his debts — or who is paying Wulf’s legal bills. As Bleeding Heartland notes, the source of the funds could be “Lahn [himself], any member of Lahn’s family, any donor to Lahn’s campaign, or anyone Iowa law would prohibit from making a gift to state legislators and candidates.”

When pressed about Wulf’s finances, a Lahn spokesperson told Iowans it was none of their business and said the campaign had already “answered the questions we’re going to answer.”

From Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson Terra Hernandez:

“Who is paying off Derek Wulf’s massive debts, and why are they willing to loan him hundreds of thousands of dollars?  Iowans deserve to know who is bankrolling Lahn’s running mate — and why Lahn seems dead-set on keeping it a secret.”
