RECAP: Iowans Call Out Ashley Hinson for Voting to Raise Their Health Insurance Premiums

Hinson Repeatedly Voted to Block a Bipartisan Effort to Extend Affordable Care Act Tax Credits, Driving Up Healthcare Costs for 100,000 Iowans

Des Moines Register: “Thousands of Iowans Will Likely See Their Health Insurance Premiums Rise Next Year […] The Result of the Expired Expanded Affordable Care Act Subsidies and Rising Medical Costs”

DES MOINES – Today, local Des Moines leaders and Iowans experiencing increased health insurance premiums came together to call out Ashley Hinson for causing health insurance premiums to increase for a second year in a row by voting against extending Affordable Care Act tax credits.

According to a new report from the Des Moines Register this week, thousands of Iowans could see their health insurance premiums skyrocket for the “second straight year” because of Hinson’s vote. Iowans will see average health insurance average health insurance costs increase by up to 16.84% and it comes after “nearly one fifth of Iowans with ACA plans dropped their coverage” over the last year after Hinson voted to make it more expensive.

“Families like mine are finding it impossible to take that leap to build a business because of health insurance costs,” said Amber Gustafson, Ankeny small business owner who uses the ACA. “I want to know what Ashley Hinson is going to do about it. [She] doesn’t hold town halls, so we can’t ask [her]. […] There are millions of Americans just like us: small business owners, farmers, contract workers, caregivers, and freelancers who count on the ACA for access to quality health insurance, and something has to change for families like mine. […] The only way I have to negotiate my health insurance is at the ballot box.”

“[Ashley Hinson’s] vote has led to ACA health insurance premiums to rise by 97 percent – an average of more than $1,000 dollars after the first year,” said Karl Vilums, former CFO of Broadlawns Medical Center and ACA insurance user. “I can personally attest to this as my wife and I have an ACA plan and the premiums doubled to over $1,500 a month for a high deductible plan. […] It’s time to hold Ashley Hinson accountable for her repeated votes in attacking affordable healthcare for Iowans.”

Ashley Hinson is Making Healthcare More Unaffordable and Inaccessible in Iowa:

  • Thousands of Iowans could see their health insurance premiums increase dramatically for the “second straight year.”
  • Iowans will see average health insurance costs increase by up to 16.84%.
  • Hinson has long wrecked havoc on our healthcare system. She said she was “proud” of her vote for the biggest cuts to Medicaid in history, which threatens to kick over 110,000 Iowans off their health care.
  • Hinson gave a $121 billion tax cut to the richest 1%, after voting against legislation capping prescription drug costs at $2,000 a year and insulin at $35 a month.
