DES MOINES – According to a report from the National Journal, Ashley Hinson’s push to pass the pro-China Save Our Bacon Act is responsible for holding up the Farm Bill, which hasn’t been passed by Congress since 2018.

Iowa farmers have been warning Hinson that her Save Our Bacon Act “favors international producers such as Chinese-based Smithfield Farms over independent farms.”

Iowa farmers are in desperate need of a Farm Bill. In the three years since the 2018 Farm Bill initially expired, Iowa farmers have been struggling because of Hinson-backed tariffs and high input prices from the Hinson-supported Iran war that are crushing the ag economy.

“Ashley Hinson is jeopardizing the Farm Bill to pass legislation that will help Chinese pork producers, leaving Iowa farmers in the lurch as they suffer the worst farm crisis since the 1980’s,” said Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson Drew Myers. “Hinson has supported tariffs and the war in Iran that are making it harder than ever for Iowa farmers to make a living. Come November, Iowans will remember that she stood in the way of their relief.”

National Journal: For Trump voters in farm country, economic uncertainty plants seeds of discontent

  • One of the issues holding up the farm bill is Hinson’s Save Our Bacon Act, a measure included in the House version of the farm bill that would override certain state and local animal-cruelty laws. The measure did not make it into the Senate’s version of the farm bill, and it has proved divisive within the industry. Hinson faces $2.6 million in attack ads from the American Meat Producers Association over the Save Our Bacon Act, according to the nonpartisan ad-tracking firm AdImpact.
