RECAP: Cedar Rapids Leaders Close Out “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley” Tour
At Tour’s Finale, Cedar Rapids Leaders Spotlighted Hinson’s Disingenuous Support for Stock Trading Ban and up to $5M Insurance Stock Holding
DES MOINES – Today, the “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley Tour” continued in Cedar Rapids where local leaders called out Ashley Hinson for selling out Iowans and hiking costs on working families so she and her wealthy donors can get rich. Even Hinson’s former primary opponent announced he would not vote for her because she prioritizes “lobbyists, corporations, and Washington insiders” over Iowans.
Despite claiming she sold her individual stocks and campaigning on a Congressional stock trading ban, Ashley Hinson quietly holds up to $5 million in insurance stock that has increased her net worth by up to 10 times since she was sworn into office. While Hinson campaigns on banning Congressional stock trading, the truth is she actually refused to support an effort to ban Members of Congress and their families from owning and trading stock.
Meanwhile, Iowans are struggling with rising inflation that even Senator Grassley is calling “very concerning,” healthcare cuts and premium price hikes, chaotic tariffs, and an unnecessary war in Iran — all rubber stamped by Ashley Hinson.
“[Ashley Hinson’s] been busy enriching herself while Iowans are struggling with rising costs, cuts to their health care, and an economy that’s letting them down,” said Sami Scheetz, Linn County Supervisor. “ Since she got to Washington, she has drifted farther and farther from the lives of the people that she’s supposed to represent, and she has shown us again and again with her actions that she does not share our values and she will not fight for our families. Ashley Hinson is a multi-millionaire who has grown her net worth by up to 10 times since she was sworn in just six years ago to Congress, while holding up to $5 million in insurance company stock.”
“We can’t afford another politician who says one thing on the campaign trail and does another when they’re in Washington,” said Molly Donahue, Iowa State Senator for District 37. “ We can’t afford someone who puts wealthy donors and special interests ahead of working families. We can’t afford six more years of higher costs and broken promises”
“I’m here because we need to make sure that we have the right person in the U.S. Senate fighting for working people,” said Mike Sadler, President of the Cedar Rapids / Iowa City Building Trades Council. “Ashley Hinson is terrible for working people and absolutely the wrong person to be the next U.S. Senate senator from Iowa. As a lifelong Iowan, Ashley is not acting like she cares about working people.”
Hinson isn’t looking out for hardworking Iowans – she’s looking out for herself and the rich and powerful.
- Despite claiming she sold her individual stocks and campaigning on a Congressional stock trading ban, Ashley Hinson quietly holds up to $5 million in insurance company stock.
- Since being elected to Congress, she increased her net worth by up to 10X – by as much as $7.5 million.
- While Hinson campaigns on a stock trading ban, she actually refused to support a bipartisan discharge petition that would have forced a vote on legislation to ban stock trading and ownership for Members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children.
- The legislation she does support “does nothing to ban ownership of existing assets,” allowing her to maintain her portfolio “while voting on federal policies that can directly impact the industry.”
- She voted to cut taxes for the wealthiest 1 percent by more than $100 billion.
