RECAP: Des Moines Leaders Continue “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley” Tour

Des Moines Leaders Spotlighted Hinson’s Disingenuous Support for Stock Trading Ban and up to $5M Insurance Stock Holding

DES MOINES – Today, the “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley Tour” continued in Des Moines, where local leaders called out Ashley Hinson for selling out Iowans and hiking costs on working families so that she and her wealthy donors can get rich. Just recently,  Hinson’s former primary opponent announced he would not vote for her because she prioritizes “lobbyists, corporations, and Washington insiders” over Iowans.

Despite claiming she sold her individual stocks and campaigning on a Congressional stock trading ban, Ashley Hinson quietly holds up to $5 million in insurance company stock that has increased her net worth by up to 10 times since she was sworn into office. While Hinson campaigns on banning Congressional stock trading, the truth is she actually refused to support an effort to ban Members of Congress and their families from owning and trading stock.

Meanwhile, Iowans are struggling from rising inflation that even Senator Grassley is calling “very concerning,” healthcare cuts and premium price hikes, chaotic tariffs, and an unnecessary war in Iran — all rubber stamped by Ashley Hinson.

“Ashley [Hinson] has been looking out for herself and her rich donors at the expense of Iowans who are struggling with rising costs, cuts to health insurance, and an economy that is in decline,”  said State Representative Jennifer Konfrst. “She has increased her net worth by up to ten times since she was sworn into office just 6 years ago. She holds up to $5 million in insurance company stock despite campaigning on a congressional stock trading ban. Ashley says one thing and does another.”

“[Ashley Hinson] is not one of us. She’s not a working class person like all of us that know the struggle of every day,” said Nathan Sage, former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate. “In fact, she’s trying to do everything she can to appease the oligarchy and the corporations and the billionaires that fund her. At the end of the day, we need people that are going to actually fight for us – people who know the struggle, not people who are lying to us.”

“While people like us have been struggling with rising costs and access to healthcare, Ashley Hinson has been getting rich,” said Tiara Mays-Sims, Iowa parent, healthcare professional, and community advocate. “As of today, her massive private portfolio is worth millions. She went to Congress and increased net worth up to ten times, all while voting time and time again with votes that hurt us.”

“Ashley Hinson supposedly supports banning stock trading by members of Congress, but refused to sign a discharge petition that would’ve forced a vote to end congressional stock trading,” said Jeff Erickson, retired Des Moines letter carrier after delivering mail for 33 years. “[…] She is enriching herself at the expense of others like you and I. Meanwhile, everyday Iowans just trying to make ends meet are falling further and further behind.”

Hinson isn’t looking out for hardworking Iowans – she’s looking out for herself and the rich and powerful.

  • While Hinson campaigns on a stock trading ban, she actually refused to support a bipartisan discharge petition that would have forced a vote on legislation to ban stock trading and ownership for Members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children.
  • She voted to cut taxes for the wealthiest 1 percent by more than $100 billion.
