Iowa Democratic Party Statement on Ashley Hinson
Des Moines — Following Representative Ashley Hinson securing the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate, Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart released the following statement:
“Ashley Hinson has spent her time in DC working for herself, not Iowans,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “She is a multimillionaire who increased her net worth by as much as tenfold during her time in Congress while voting to cut Medicaid, veterans funding, and taxes for billionaires. In November, Iowans will hold her accountable for her record of forcing rural hospitals to close, sending the cost of living skyrocketing, and plunging the ag economy into a recession.”
What to Know About Ashley Hinson:
- Hinson isn’t looking out for hardworking Iowans – she’s looking out for herself and the rich and powerful.
- She voted to cut taxes for the wealthiest 1 percent by more than $100 billion.
- Since being elected to Congress, she increased her net worth by up to 10X – up to $7.5 million.
- She refused to sign a bipartisan discharge petition to prohibit stock trading and ownership by members of Congress.
- Hinson is making healthcare more expensive and out of reach for Iowans.
- She said she was “proud” of her vote for the biggest cuts to Medicaid in history, which threatens to kick over 110,000 Iowans off their health care and has put multiple hospitals at risk of closing due to Medicaid cuts, with several closures already underway.
- She repeatedly voted against billions in funding for veterans health care, and against capping prescription drug costs for people on Medicare.
- She voted to block a bipartisan effort to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits to stop health care costs from skyrocketing that is expected to kick 24,000 Iowans off their health insurance, with an estimated 117,890 seeing their insurance costs increase by 97% – an average of $1,080.
- Hinson has a long record of attacking programs that Iowa seniors rely on. She supported raising the retirement age to 69 and backed slashing funds for the Social Security Administration that would cause backlogs, wait times, and disruptions.
- Hinson has a radical anti-choice agenda that is out of step with many Iowans:
- She voted for an Iowa abortion ban, which was described as “the nation’s strictest abortion law.”
- She co-sponsored a national abortion ban with no exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother, that would also ban common forms of birth control.
- She voted against the bipartisan Right to Contraception Act, which would have enacted protections for birth control access following the Dobbs decision.
