DES MOINES – Iowa farmers are fed up with chaotic DC tariffs that Ashley Hinson continues to support. Last week, Hinson voted to keep in place 25 percent tariffs on Canada despite the harm they are causing on farmers across Iowa.

Iowa Public Radio: Congress pushes back on Trump’s tariffs without support from Iowa’s House representatives

  • Pam Johnson, a retired Iowa farmer, described her reaction to the House vote as “jubilation” and said it’s “a door opening” to other trade-related resolutions.
  • Johnson previously held numerous leadership positions in the agricultural industry, including as president of the National Corn Growers Association and MAIZALL, a coalition of corn farmer associations from Argentina, Brazil and the U.S. Part of her work in these roles focused on reducing trade barriers.
  • I want the products that are made not only in Iowa but … in America to go from places where we have surpluses, like in grain, to places all over the world that need it,” Johnson said.

  • Iowa Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Ashley Hinson, Zach Nunn and Randy Feenstra joined Republicans who backed Trump’s Canada tariffs.
  • Their support for Trump’s tariffs comes despite concern that they are contributing to Iowa’s agriculture struggles. Iowa farm income is projected to be 37% less than 2022, the most recent peak year for earnings, University of Missouri data shows.
