While Some Republicans Have Had Enough, Iowa Republicans Turn Their Backs on Farmers, Vote to Protect Trump’s Harmful Tariffs
Iowa’s Republican Representatives voted to ban legislation that would end Trump’s tariffs through July 31, 2026
DES MOINES – While some Republicans have had enough, Iowa Republicans Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn all voted to protect Donald Trump’s harmful tariffs for a third time.
Tariffs are costing American families roughly $2,100 a year. Republicans are voting for higher taxes on Iowans, historic cuts to health care and higher electricity bills while they handed out huge tax breaks to the well-off and well-connected last year.
Before the vote, Republican Don Bacon stepped up and said ‘I don’t think tariffs are good,’ yet Iowa Republicans silently voted for the measure. Ultimately, three Republicans voted against the measure.
Iowa’s farmers and the entire agricultural community are already facing extreme financial stress and bracing to potentially lose money for a fourth-consecutive year.
“While some Republicans have had enough, Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn prioritized party loyalty over Iowa farmers as they voted to protect Donald Trump’s harmful tariffs for a third time today,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Why won’t Iowa’s representatives admit Trump’s tariffs are costing families thousands of dollars and are putting undue stress on Iowa’s farmers and agricultural community?”
This vote comes on the heels of a new U.S.-Argentina trade deal negotiated by the Trump Administration that could quadruple the amount of Argentine beef imports into the country, hurting Iowa cattle farmers.
Farmers are also waiting for the Trump Administration to decide whether E15 sales will be allowed year-round — something experts say could be key to saving family farms.
To make matters worse, Republicans haven’t agreed to a new Farm Bill, which expired on Sept. 30, 2025.
