ICYMI: MercyOne Announces More Layoffs in Mason City

The announcement follows health care layoffs in Des Moines, clinic closure in Ottumwa

Des Moines – MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City will lay off 34 employees on March 17.

MercyOne previously announced 67 Des Moines-based employees will be let go in March and 40 health care workers will lose their jobs when MercyOne’s Ottumwa clinic closes later this month.

In a press release issued earlier this year, MercyOne’s parents company Trinity Health said the company’s annual revenue is expected to fall by $1.5 billion due to federal health care cuts:

“The recent and future government funding policy changes are projected to reduce Trinity Health’s annual revenue by $1.5 billion. Additionally, more reductions in coverage, payment and access to Medicaid and Medicare are being considered by the federal government. It is not possible to simply absorb such a significant financial impact without making thoughtful, forward-thinking changes.”

Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn all voted for the largest Medicaid cuts in history in 2025, and stood idly by as Affordable Care Act premium tax credits expired at the beginning of 2026 and families saw their health care premiums double.

According to recent data, about 13,500 (10%) fewer Iowans enrolled in the ACA in 2026 than in 2025

“Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn all knew Iowa’s hospitals and Iowa patients would suffer when these four puppets voted for the largest cuts to Medicaid in history and they let health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act more than double for thousands of Iowans. Now, here we are a few months later facing nearly 150 health care related layoffs and the closure of a rural clinic,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Iowans already have a hard enough time finding and affording quality care without politicians making it even harder. It is clearly time for change.”
