Iowa Representatives Vacation While Iowans Go Hungry
Feenstra, Miller-Meeks, Nunn, and Hinson are absent from D.C. while hundreds of thousands of Iowans are set to lose SNAP benefits
DES MOINES – The government shutdown continues into its thirtieth day, and Iowa’s representatives are nowhere to be found. The House remains out of session, and instead of convincing Speaker Johnson to reconvene, Feenstra, Nunn, Hinson, and Miller-Meeks are busy enjoying their vacation while the crisis deepens.
On November 1st the USDA will stop distributing SNAP benefits, a move that will take food off the tables of millions of American families. 259,000 people rely on SNAP in Iowa alone. Thousands of families across the state will go hungry unless action is taken immediately.
The USDA has emergency funds for SNAP, but under the direction of Trump, they’re refusing to use them.
Republicans are using the American people as pawns in their game, while Feenstra, Hinson, Miller-Meeks, and Nunn stand by and watch.
“The USDA has the money to feed hungry Iowans in November, but the Trump administration is refusing to release these funds. Instead of working to ensure veterans, mothers, and children can access the food they need, Republicans are using people’s lives as leverage to continue playing political games,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Iowa families should not have to worry about putting food on the table because of Washington gridlock. It’s time for Republicans to do their job and put people before politics.”
