Republican Gubernatorial Candidates Promise to Raise Taxes on Working Iowans
Republican candidates for governor are running on raising taxes
DES MOINES – Republicans vying to be Iowa’s next governor seem to have one thing on their mind – raising taxes on working Iowans.
RADIO IOWA: Florida lawmakers have introduced a slate of bills this week that would completely eliminate property taxes in their state. Andrews is suggesting he’ll propose three different alternatives that would offset the loss of property tax revenue to local governments.
“The simplest one that people talk about is simply increasing the sales tax,” Eddie Andrews told Radio Iowa.
Brad Sherman also floated the idea of raising sales taxes on Iowa Press last week.
“I would love to see no property tax. It’d be great. But, I don’t know there’s a way to fund our essential services if we were to cut out all property taxes. How do you do that? There’s only two ways you can do that. One, you could do a sales tax. And the other would be an income tax,” Sherman said.
Randy Feenstra is also guilty of trying to raise prices on Iowans. Feenstra voted against a motion that would’ve extended key tax credits that 28,000 Iowans in his district rely on.
“Ten years of one-party Republican rule in Iowa has left us with a billion-dollar budget deficit, handouts to the well-off and well-connected, and an unaccountable voucher program. Now Republicans are suggesting raising taxes on hard-working Iowans instead of reversing course on their failed policies, ” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “This is happening while Republicans in Congress like Randy Feenstra are simultaneously trying to raise healthcare prices on Iowans. Grocery prices are already high enough. The last thing working Iowans need is to be paying higher taxes and more for their healthcare.”
