RECAP: Iowa Veterans Call Out Ashley Hinson for Voting Seven Times to Continue Iran War Eight Months After it Started
DES MOINES – Today in Des Moines, Iowa veterans came together on the eighth month anniversary of the war in Iran to speak about the impact Ashley Hinson’s seven votes to continue the war are having on Iowans and U.S. servicemembers.
Today’s event continues the “Hinson’s Gain, Iowa’s Pain” statewide tour.
It comes after a new report from MeidasTouch News found Ashley Hinson was “rewarded” by Big Oil companies with an additional $20,000 in campaign contributions after she voted a seventh time to continue the war in Iran. Additionally, despite saying she wants an immediate end to the war, Hinson said she would support another major offensive after the midterms in an interview with ABC News over the weekend.
Key context: Hinson cast her seventh vote to continue the war in Iran just weeks ago as it devastated Iowa with “record diesel prices,” “surg[ing]” gas costs, fertilizer prices “near peak levels,” and inflation higher than the national average. She has repeatedly defended the war in Iran and downplayed the impact on Iowans, calling it “out of sight, out of mind” as Iowans struggle to pay their bills. ” She has raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars from Big Oil, and now those companies are seeing record profits up to $14 billion from the Iran war.
“Ashley Hinson blindly keeps voting yes for [the war in Iran] while she says she wants to see the war come to an end,” said Nathan Sage, former U.S. Senate candidate and Marine and Navy veteran. “There are families in Iowa that don’t have family members here anymore because of what Ashley voted for. So, we need to have a representative who actually fights for Iowans.”
“I served in the United States Army Security Agency from 1968 to 1972. I was in Vietnam from late December of 1969 until early December of 1970 […] Congresswoman Hinson has voted for this war seven times. These votes have a real cost,” said Ray Walton, Vietnam veteran. “It’s been an enormous cost to all of us, not just in dollars and cents, but emotionally. It has been very, very difficult. It’s a catastrophic vote.”
“[Ashley Hinson’s] seven votes to continue the war in Iran are unforgivable,” said Nancy Bobo, wife of an Air Force veteran. “Look at where our state and our country are eight months after this disastrous war began. Our brave men and women are paying the ultimate sacrifice by serving the country admirably in the Middle East. Three of our own have lost their lives. Their deaths are not simply numbers in a military report. They are lives cut short, families forever changed, and communities that are left grieving. But Ashley Hinson doesn’t care. In the six years since she’s been in office, Hinson has grown her net worth by up to 15 times by quietly holding millions in insurance stock.”
