Cancer Survivor Calls Out Zach Lahn for Pledging to Ban mRNA Cancer Treatments

DES MOINES – Today, an Iowan who survived breast cancer joined the IDP to hold Zach Lahn accountable for pledging to ban lifesaving mRNA cancer treatments and supporting devastating “cuts to cancer research funding and rural healthcare.”

Iowa has one of the highest rates of new cancer growth in the country, but Lahn would ban “any mRNA vaccine in Iowa” and doesn’t have a real plan to address our water quality and cancer crises. According to the American Cancer Society, “using mRNA is a promising new way to make vaccines to help treat cancer,” and “clinical trials are testing mRNA cancer vaccines in several types of cancer … Early results have been promising.”

“Just over a year ago I was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer … It was my last day of chemotherapy treatment one year ago today,” said breast cancer survivor Dana Drochner. “Cancer is now one of my top priorities in this upcoming election. I benefited from new medical treatments, and there’s more and more that are being developed every day, such as the mRNA vaccines … all treatments should be up for consideration to fight this disease.”

“Everywhere I go in Iowa, I’m hearing from voters that cancer is one of the top issues in this election, and of course it should be. It’s touched families and friends across our state, including mine,” said IDP Chair Rita Hart. “Zach Lahn would threaten access to health care as governor by banning lifesaving mRNA cancer treatments in Iowa … He would continue Kim Reynolds’ legacy of downplaying the cancer crisis, and he would put his own extreme agenda over the health of all Iowans. We can’t afford four more years of more of the same.”
