Zach Lahn Stumbles Into November “Facing Scrutiny” for “Damaging” and “Controversial” Scandals
DES MOINES – With less than two weeks to go until Election Day, carpetbagger and career political operative Zach Lahn continues to make headlines for living in Kansas, his running mate’s legal and financial scandals, and his financial ties to special interests.
Iowans are reading that Lahn has had “difficulty making a clean break with [Kansas],” “seems very involved in Kansas matters,” and “spends more time outside Iowa than in the state he hopes to govern.” Additionally, “most of Republican Zach Lahn’s money comes from D.C.,” and he’s taken huge “contributions from CEOs of Big Agriculture companies.” Lahn has continued to face “scrutiny” for his running mate’s “damaging” and “controversial” theft and fraud allegations, which have become a “political headache” for their campaign.
What Iowans are reading about Zach Lahn just a week out from Election Day:
KCCI: Lt. governor candidate Derek Wulf accused of owing $275,000 in farmland rent as election approaches
- The Zach Lahn for governor campaign is facing scrutiny after court documents revealed financial allegations against Derek Wulf, Lahn’s running mate for lieutenant governor, less than two weeks before the election.
- KCCI political analyst Dennis Goldford commented on the potential impact of Wulf’s legal issues on the Lahn campaign. “In any close election, the slightest little blip can make a difference,” Goldford said.
- Goldford added that controversies, especially in the final weeks of a campaign, can be damaging.
New York Magazine: Iowa’s GOP Candidate for Governor Might Not Live in Iowa
- What has made his case interesting — and for supporters of his Democratic opponent, Rob Sand, hilarious — is his difficulty making a clean break with it. He seems very involved in Kansas matters.
- He remains president of the board of an unaccredited Wichita private school he co-founded with his wife, albeit when they were both married to other people … And the children from the blended families he and his wife left in Kansas have given Lahn a reason to fly his private plane back to Wichita a lot — at least 37 times since he began running for governor, according to the Des Moines Register.
- But that isn’t the only evidence that Lahn has Kansas on his mind. Last month, the Daily Beast reported that a Strava fitness-app user with the name “Zach Lahn” recorded four long bike rides starting at Lahn’s Wichita estate over three months in early 2025, long after his supposed relocation to Iowa.
- Perhaps more eyebrow-raising have been his public musings over the amount of time he’ll need to spend away from Iowa’s capital if he does become the governor of the Hawkeye State. “We’ve already had discussions about this and how that would work,” he told the Register in May. “But if I’m elected governor, it would be a different arrangement, and we’d work it out. Because, you know, we’d be in Iowa as much as humanly possible.”
Raw Story: CNN host fires back at MAGA candidate melting down over residency: ‘I wasn’t fed this’
- The confrontation began almost immediately when Sanchez pressed Lahn about reports that he spends more time outside Iowa than in the state he hopes to govern, prompting the Trump-backed MAGA candidate to accuse CNN of amplifying attacks from his Democratic opponent.
- Sanchez explained that Iowa voters had raised questions about Lahn’s residency, but the Republican continued blaming his opponent’s advertising.
Daily Mail: Humiliation for Republican running for office as his own parents come forward to claim he owes them $275,000
- Derek Wulf is embroiled in an extraordinary family feud after his elderly parents accused him of failing to pay rent on their farmland for more than two years – piling fresh embarrassment onto a politician already battling a cascade of financial and legal woes.
- The extraordinary accusations threaten to deepen the political headache facing Wulf, a state representative who is running alongside Republican gubernatorial nominee Zach Lahn.
- But with a multimillion-dollar bank dispute still in play, questions over livestock ownership and his own parents now claiming hundreds of thousands of dollars, Wulf faces an increasingly uncomfortable fight to contain the fallout.
Daily Beast: Republican Candidate Gets Shamed by His Own Parents
- A Republican candidate has been humiliated by his own parents on the home stretch of his campaign … that will only add to the headache for Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn.
- Lahn defended his running mate’s growing list of scandals last week.
Heartland Signal: Cash from D.C.
- Analysis of campaign finance filings through July 2026 shows that most of Republican Zach Lahn’s money comes from D.C., and most of Democrat Rob Sand’s money comes from donors with an Iowa address.
- In 2025 and 2026, Lahn loaned his campaign $2.5 million. Until recently, Lahn’s website said that his campaign is “self funded.” It was updated in mid-October and no longer includes the claim.
- But Lahn did accept contributions from CEOs of Big Agriculture companies. Campaign filings show that Lahn accepted $50,000 from James Dean, CEO of egg producer Versova, and another $50,000 from Gage A. Kent, CEO of beef producer Kent Worldwide.
