RECAP: Mason City Leaders, Iowa Farmers Call Out Ashley Hinson for Voting 7x to Continue Iran War

MASON CITY – Today in Mason City, local leaders and farmers came together to call out Ashley Hinson for raising their gas, diesel, and grocery costs by voting seven times to continue the Iran War.

Today’s event continues the “Hinson’s Gain, Iowa’s Pain” statewide tour and follows Hinson releasing a desperate statement last week trying (and failing) to hide her seven votes to support the war after multiple polls have shown her losing the Senate race.

Key context: Prior to recessing from Congress early, Hinson cast her seventh vote to continue the war in Iran as it devastates Iowa with “record diesel prices,” “surg[ing]” gas costs, fertilizer prices “near peak levels,” and inflation higher than the national average. She has repeatedly defended the war in Iran and downplayed the impact on Iowans, despite admitting in private that it’s becoming a “political liability.” She has raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars from Big Oil, and now those companies are seeing record profits up to $14 billion from the Iran war.

The costs from the war come on top of her votes to cut healthcare for 110,000 Iowans and make it more expensive for 119,000 Iowans – all while she has increased her wealth by up to 15x since getting to Congress.

“For the last six years, we’ve been feeling the pain of Ashley Hinson’s vote,” said Sharon Steckman, Former State Representative from Mason City. “What I’m talking about are her seven votes to continue the war in Iran, her five votes to continue the disastrous tariffs, and her vote for the One Big Beautiful Bill, which has played havoc with our health care. These votes are sending the prices of gasoline and diesel through the roof, and we’re all seeing that in our gas tank. Our groceries are more expensive and our healthcare system is crashing.”

“[My son and I] had been putting off the purchase of the [diesel]. Last January, I had the opportunity to refuel my bulk fuel tanks with $2.11 cent diesel fuel,” said Doug Thompson, Hancock County farmer. “ I just did the math. I paid the check yesterday, and I have a big tank, and I ordered a semi-load in of 7,000 gallons, and the 7,000 gallons came in at $5.39. So you’ve got $2.11 in January – $5.39 just now.”

“’I’ve farmed south of Clear Lake all of my life, and you know, just tried to survive being a small farmer,” said Chris Petersen, Cerro Gordo County farmer. “Rural hospitals are closing – lack of funds. The word is, don’t have a heart attack in rural Iowa, you ain’t gonna make it to a hospital in time. It’s the American dream in reverse. This needs to change. We need to get America back, and the number one step is getting rid of the pain. Part of it being Ashley Hinson.”
