RECAP: Iowa Leaders Continue “Hinson’s Gain, Iowa’s Pain” Statewide Tour in Sioux City, Call Out Ashley Hinson for Raising Costs by Voting 7x to Continue Iran War
DES MOINES – Today in Sioux City, Iowa leaders and Iowans impacted by high diesel, gas, and grocery costs from the Ashley Hinson-backed Iran War continued the “Hinson’s Gain, Iowa’s Pain” statewide tour.
Key context: Last week, Hinson cast her seventh vote to continue the war in Iran as it devastates Iowa with “record diesel prices,” “surg[ing]” gas costs, fertilizer prices “near peak levels,” and inflation higher than the national average. She has repeatedly and publicly defended the war in Iran and downplayed the impact on Iowans, despite admitting in private that it’s becoming a “political liability.” She raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars from Big Oil companies profiting from the Iran War, then voted to continue the conflict.
“Public office shouldn’t be an investment opportunity, but that’s how Hinson has treated it,” said Corey Davis, President of Communication Workers of America Local 7103. “She holds up to $5 million in insurance stock. She made as much as $1 million on it last year alone. That’s insane to me. How is she going to vote against the rights of workers while she’s taking advantage of the system that she’s been elected to? Ashley Henson’s priority is herself. […] While we are literally paying the price for high gas, diesel, [and] healthcare, Ashley’s gaining.”
“[Ashley Hinson’s] votes in Washington are killing us in Sioux City,” said Jody House, candidate for Woodbury County Supervisor. “Earlier this year, UnityPoint clinic in Moville closed. Our truck drivers are getting squeezed with record high diesel prices. Our farmers are telling me that the harvesting is taking a hit because of the double whammy of the tariffs and high input costs. You would think Ashley Hinson would care about us, but she doesn’t. She doesn’t care about rural Iowans.”
“Ashley Hinson is not the person that should be representing us in Washington, or in Des Moines, or at a county fair, for that matter,” said Garie Lewis, a Sioux City resident who gets healthcare through Medicaid. “Her values have shown throughout her entire term and she has proven that all she cares about is herself. [Corey and Jody] already told you about the lavish lifestyle, how her net worth has increased so much since she got elected, and that’s a sad story that happens in this country far too often. We send people to Washington who we think are going to represent us – the people that put them there. They get there and find out that they can be bought and they’re not representing us.”
