RECAP: Iowa Leaders Launch “Hinson’s Gain, Iowa’s Pain” Statewide Tour in Cedar Rapids, Call Out Ashley Hinson for Getting Rich While Hurting Iowans
DES MOINES – Today in Cedar Rapids, Iowa leaders and Iowans impacted by healthcare cuts and rising costs launched the “Hinson’s Gain, Iowa’s Pain” statewide tour.
Attendees today gathered one year after Hinson launched her campaign, calling her out for enriching herself at the expense of Iowans, all while refusing to hold a single in-person town hall to hear from the Iowans whose healthcare she’s cutting and costs she’s raising.
Key context: Hinson is a multi-millionaire who has gotten 10x wealthier in office while repeatedly selling out Iowans to enrich herself and her billionaire donors. She has voted to cut healthcare for 110,000 Iowans, continue a war that is sending gas prices soaring, and support tariffs that are hammering Iowa farmers and making everything more expensive.
“I see families who can’t afford their premiums. I see seniors choosing between prescriptions and groceries. I see a healthcare system in this state that is stretched to the breaking point, said Sami Scheetz, Linn County Board Supervisor. “That’s Iowa’s pain, and it is a direct result of Ashley Henson’s financial gain. This is who she will be in the United States Senate: six more years of looking out for her donors, her portfolio, and herself. Six more years of Iowans paying the price. Iowans cannot afford Ashley Hinson any longer.”
“When Sami talks about Ashley Hinson’s corruption coming at our expense, he’s talking about people like me,” said Shawn Gallagher, Owner of Ad Craft Printing. “My business has been hammered by the costly and chaotic tariffs that Hinson has defended while smiling at the camera, saying they’re working. Well, they’re not working for Ad Craft. We have seen our paper and toner costs rise by more than 30 percent due to the Trump-Hinson tariffs and the rise in shipping costs due to Hinson’s support of [the Iran] war. […] It’s obvious that Ashley is just another corrupt politician who’s more concerned about enriching herself and her billionaire donors than about ordinary working Iowans.”
“As a retired senior citizen, I rely on Social Security and Medicare,” said Keith Jacklin, Cedar Rapids senior on Medicare and Social Security. “I, like everyone else here today, am feeling the pain of Ashley Hinson’s gains. Since coming into office, Hinson hasn’t hesitated to support cuts to Social Security to please her billionaire donors. Just last week, her spokesperson admitted that she cut staffing at the Social Security offices that help Iowans get their benefits. Now, when you call Social Security and get stuck on hold, you know who to blame: It’s Ashley Hinson.”
