DES MOINES – Iowans in every corner of the state are continuing to hear all about how Ashley Hinson’s six votes to continue the Iran War are continuing to drive up prices, leaving Iowans to struggle under the weight of record diesel prices and uniquely high inflation.
Iowa farmers are warning that sky high diesel prices are “going to affect harvesting and hauling it to town” as the latest reports show “it will cost Iowa farmers at least $1,200 more to harvest a 160-acre field of corn this year.”
Meanwhile, Iowa families are being hit particularly hard by higher inflation after a report showed this “is the seventh month in a row that the Midwest has had higher inflation than the national average.”
“More than other states across the country, Iowa is uniquely feeling the pain of record high diesel prices from Ashley Hinson’s many votes to continue the war in Iran,” said Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson Drew Myers. “Just as farmers across Iowa are getting ready to harvest, they’re being hit with one of the worst increases in diesel prices in history because Hinson cares more about herself and her wealthy donors than bringing down costs for Iowans.”

Radio Iowa: Iowa diesel price up 58% from a year ago
- The average price for a gallon of diesel fuel in Iowa is at a record high $6.06 a gallon today according to Triple-A.
- The price of diesel in Iowa today is about 58% higher than it was a year ago. An analysis by Penn State University found Midwest farmers use about three gallons of diesel for every acre of corn and soybeans they harvest. That suggesting that with today’s price it will cost Iowa farmers at least $1200 more to harvest a 160-acre field of corn this year.
WHBF: QCA farmers react to record-high diesel prices
- Prices for diesel fuel climbed to a record high this week. The national average is $6.23 a gallon as of Monday, according to AAA. Local farmers rely on diesel to make it through the harvest season.
- “I’ll probably only get enough fuel to make it through the spring and we’ll see,” said Joe Dierickx, a farmer outside of DeWitt, Iowa.
KTIV: Diesel prices strain Siouxland farmers as gas costs also climb
- The price of diesel has steadily risen over the past few months, straining the wallets of drivers and farmers alike.
- AAA says on Monday, Sept. 14, the average price of diesel in Iowa was $6.06 per gallon, up more than $2.50 from the same time last year.
- Along with drivers, many farmers say the rise in cost has forced them to adjust for the harvest season. Austin Carlson, who runs Carlson Farms near Quimby, Iowa, with his father, says he didn’t anticipate how high prices would climb.
- “We usually would book diesel for contract, say 1,000 or 2,000 gallons. This spring we had a decent price, should have booked more, thinking maybe it would go down and it’s only gone up from there,” Carlson said. “That’s going to affect harvesting and hauling it to town. It’ll cost an extra anywhere from $10 to $18 per trip, hauling it to Little Sioux Corn Processors or over to Platinum Crush.”
KCRG: Inflation up in the Midwest as it continues to outpace national average, report finds
- The latest report from the Common Sense Institute says the Midwest’s inflation rose to 3.6% in August from 3.5% a year ago.
- That’s higher than the national average Consumer Price Index, which stayed flat at 3.4% from this time last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Common Sense Institute says this is the seventh month in a row that the Midwest has had higher inflation than the national average.
