DES MOINES – The Ashley Hinson-backed Iran war and tariffs are continuing to take a wrecking ball to Iowans’ wallets as rising gas, back-to-school, and grocery costs continue a cost of living crisis.
Average gas prices in Iowa remain above $4 a gallon as the Iran war Hinson voted to continue six times shows no signs of stopping. Meanwhile, back-t0-school costs are topping $954 for Iowa families as kids return to school this week and food banks across Iowa report more and more Iowans can’t afford groceries.

Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier: Food bank sees increase in food insecurity in northeastern Iowa
- The [Northeast Iowa Food Bank] states nearly 45,000 people – 14,800 of them children – use its resources. That is one in eight people or one in six children that do not always know where their next meal will come from.
- “The numbers reflect what we see every day,” Executive Director Barb Prather said. “We believe food is a basic human right. Yet families across northeast Iowa are working hard while rising grocery prices, utility bills, housing costs and transportation expenses continue to make it difficult to put enough food on the table.”
- According to statewide survey results from the Iowa Food Bank Association, nearly one in three Iowans say they are worse off financially than they were one year ago, more than two-thirds are dissatisfied with the cost of groceries and 77% report changing the amount or type of food they purchase because of rising prices.

KGAN: Iowans paying more for gas as prices rise more than 15 cents a gallon
- The average cost of gas in Iowa is up 15.8 cents a gallon this week, according to GasBuddy. In the last month, GasBuddy shows the average cost has rising 29.1 cents and are $1.21 higher than a year ago. GasBuddy reports Iowans are paying an average of $4.08 a gallon.
- The average price of diesel has also increased 16.6 cents a gallon in the last week. Diesel is now $5.58 a gallon.
- AAA reports similar increases, showing Iowans paying $4.07 a gallon, up 15 cents a gallon from $3.92 a week ago. Last year AAA recorded $2.88 per gallon as the average price of gas in the state, up $1.19 per gallon.
