RECAP: Council Bluffs Leaders Continue “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley” Tour

Council Bluffs Leaders Spotlighted Hinson’s Disingenuous Support for Stock Trading Ban and up to $5M Insurance Stock Holding

DES MOINES – Today, the “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley Tour” continued in Council Bluffs where local leaders called out Ashley Hinson for selling out Iowans and hiking costs on working families so that she and her wealthy donors can get rich. Even Hinson’s former primary opponent announced he would not vote for her because she prioritizes “lobbyists, corporations, and Washington insiders” over Iowans.

Despite claiming she sold her individual stocks and campaigning on a Congressional stock trading ban, Ashley Hinson quietly holds up to $5 million in insurance company stock that has increased her net worth by up to 10 times since she was sworn into office. While Hinson campaigns on banning Congressional stock trading, the truth is she actually refused to support an effort to ban Members of Congress and their families from owning and trading stock.

Meanwhile, Iowans are struggling from rising inflation that even Senator Grassley is calling “very concerning,” healthcare cuts and premium price hikes, chaotic tariffs, and an unnecessary war in Iran — all rubber stamped by Ashley Hinson.

“As [Ashley Hinson’s] wealth has multiplied, Iowa families have fallen further behind,” said Benjamin Schauer, Co-Chair of the Harrison County Democratic Party and Candidate for Iowa House District 15. “While her investment portfolio surged, Iowa fell to 44th in hourly wages, 48th in personal income growth, and 50th in economic growth. Her votes to cut Medicaid funding have jeopardized rural health care security, all while Iowa moved to the number two spot for cancer cases in the United States. To be blunt, while Hinson clearly is able to absorb the cost of her tariff policies, Iowa families do not have the same economic luxury.”

“In our schools we strive to create future leaders who lead with integrity and honesty,” said Shari Massman Anderson, Former President of the Council Bluffs Education Association. “Hinson obviously didn’t take that lesson that we work to instill in our students because she has betrayed the trust of Iowans who put her in office to make life more affordable. Instead, she turned around and spent her time in office making life more unaffordable for all of us, while making sure she and her billionaire and corporate donors got rich.”

“[Ashley Hinson’s] in public office supposedly to help Iowans, but she clearly hasn’t been focused on that part of her job,” said Melissa DeLong, concerned Council Bluffs resident. “Instead, she’s continuing to hold on to private insurance stock worth millions, despite campaigning on a congressional stock trading ban. She’s getting rich at our expense and nowhere is that more true than Council Bluffs.”

Hinson isn’t looking out for hardworking Iowans – she’s looking out for herself and the rich and powerful.

  • While Hinson campaigns on a stock trading ban, she actually refused to support a bipartisan discharge petition that would have forced a vote on legislation to ban stock trading and ownership for Members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children.
  • She voted to cut taxes for the wealthiest 1 percent by more than $100 billion.
