RECAP: Sioux City Leaders Continue “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley” Tour

Sioux City Leaders Spotlighted Hinson’s Disingenuous Support for Stock Trading Ban and up to $5M Insurance Stock Holding

DES MOINES – Today, the “Iowa Can’t Afford Ashley Tour” continued in Sioux City, where local leaders called out Ashley Hinson for selling out Iowans and hiking costs on working families so that she and her wealthy donors can get rich.

Despite claiming she sold her individual stocks and campaigning on a Congressional stock trading ban, Ashley Hinson quietly holds up to $5 million in insurance company stock that has increased her net worth by up to 10 times since she was sworn into office. While Hinson campaigns on banning Congressional stock trading, the truth is she actually refused to support an effort to ban Members of Congress and their families from owning and trading stock.

Meanwhile, Iowans are struggling from rising inflation that even Senator Grassley is calling “very concerning,” healthcare cuts and premium price hikes, chaotic tariffs, and an unnecessary war in Iran — all rubber stamped by Ashley Hinson.

“[Ashley Hinson] has said she is against politicians being able to trade, yet when she was presented with a discharge petition, she refused to [support] it that would have banned politicians and their spouses from doing exactly what she said she is against,”  said Shawn Olorundami, Candidate for State House District 1. “She will not put her money where her mouth is. She will not put her vote where her mouth is. Instead she has increased her wealth by ten times – 1,000 percent in the time we have sent her to Washington.”

“[Hinson’s] not representing us, she is representing her fellow Congress folks, and her fellow millionaires with their massive stock portfolios. This cannot continue,” said Woodbury County Democratic Party Chair Ryan Akerberg.

“I am one of the many Iowans that have been affected by the fact that Ashley Hinson has increased her own net worth up to ten times as a holder of $5 million in insurance company stock,” said Garie Lewis, a Sioux City resident who gets healthcare through Medicaid. “How that affects me is I’ve been dependent on Medicaid for many years now. Without Medicaid I would be in a world of hurt. […] [We cannot] be represented by someone whose interest is to cut Medicaid for her own personal gain.”

“Too many politicians are focused on helping themselves and protecting the wealthy,” said Jessica Lopez-Walker, Candidate for State House District 2.That has to change.”

Hinson isn’t looking out for hardworking Iowans – she’s looking out for herself and the rich and powerful.

  • While Hinson campaigns on a stock trading ban, she actually refused to support a bipartisan discharge petition that would have forced a vote on legislation to ban stock trading and ownership for Members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children.
  • She voted to cut taxes for the wealthiest 1 percent by more than $100 billion.
