4 Days, 4 Ways GOP Gov Candidates Are Wrong for Iowa: Ripping Away Health care

DES MOINES – In the final days leading up to Iowa’s June gubernatorial primary, the IDP is reminding Iowans of all the ways that Randy Feenstra, Adam Steen, Zach Lahn, Brad Sherman, and Eddie Andrews are wrong for Iowa. Today, we’re looking at how the field supports ripping health care away from Iowans.

Under Kim Reynolds and a decade of one-party rule, Iowa is first in the nation for cancer growth, 44th for physicians per capita, and last for OB-GYNs. Reynolds’ disastrous Medicaid privatization scheme has driven up costs, ripped away health care, hurt Iowans with disabilities, and closed rural hospitals, but none of the Republicans running for governor would do anything to reverse Iowa’s health care disaster.

The field supports policies that are ripping health care away from Iowans:

  • Randy Feenstra voted to pass Reynolds’ disastrous Medicaid privatization scheme in the state legislature, which has driven up costs, ripped away health care, hurt Iowans with disabilities, and closed rural hospitals.
    • In Congress, Feenstra bragged about being a “key author” of his party’s deeply unpopular budget law that threatens health care for 110,000 Iowans and puts at least 23 rural hospitals on the brink of closure, as 117,890 Iowans are seeing their premiums skyrocket.

  • Feenstra’s vote has already caused health care centers in Ottumwa and Traer to close

  • Zach Lahn has a history of opposing Medicaid expansion entirely — a position even more extreme than Reynolds’ disastrous privatization scheme.

From Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson Terra Hernandez:

“Randy Feenstra, Adam Steen, Zach Lahn, Brad Sherman, and Eddie Andrews are in full support of Kim Reynolds’ botched Medicaid privatization scheme that has driven up costs, hurt Iowans with disabilities, and closed rural hospitals. Feenstra went even further in Congress by voting to rip away health care and writing the bill that makes the largest cuts to Medicaid in history. Iowans deserve a governor who will lower costs, protect health care, and end our Medicaid disaster once and for all.”
