DES MOINES – Today, Iowa veterans called out Iowa’s GOP congressional delegation for continuing to support the war in Iran that is taking the lives of Iowa servicemembers and making life even more unaffordable for Iowa families.
They spoke out shortly before Hinson, Randy, Miller-Meeks, and Nunn all voted against a war powers resolution in the House of Representatives that would have constrained the President’s ability to continue waging a costly war in the Middle East. This is now the second time they have failed to stop the Iran war that a strong majority of Americans do not support.
“Because of the [president’s] actions and the acquiescence of people like Ashley Hinson, more American servicemembers have needlessly been killed or injured,” said John Oakley, Iowa Veteran Who Served 37 Years in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 2020. “Fuel costs have soared. Inflation is on the rise. […] All the while Ashley Hinson continues to parrot that Iowans should pay no attention to what they’re seeing everyday. Because of this war the fertilizer prices have risen higher and faster than the previous two years.”
“I was raised to understand […] that the strength of our country is a system of checks and balances, and that is my great concern,” said Matt Tapscott, Iowa Veteran Who Served 3 Years in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1975 to 1978. “Where in the world is our Congress doing their job that they allow this President […] to choose to take us to war without going through the process that has long kept our country strong and safe.”
Ashley Hinson Has Expressed Complete Support for the Iran War:
- Shortly after the war began, she said she “trust[s]” the President despite the harm the war is having on Iowans.
- She has twice voted against a war powers resolution that would have forced the President to seek constitutionally mandated congressional approval.
- She is forcing Iowa taxpayers to foot the bill for a $200 billion war, including deep cuts to Medicaid and Medicare to pay for the war.
- She has abandoned her responsibility to hold the current administration accountable by asking questions and demanding answers about the Iran war.
- She has refused to rule out troops on the ground in Iran.
- She refused to say if she supported the administration’s threats to destroy civilian infrastructure in Iran, which is a war crime.
