Iowa Farmers Are Sounding the Alarm About Rising Costs

Iowa Farmer: “A Lot of Guys Have Just Said, I’m Done. We’re Going to Quit”

DES MOINES – Ashley Hinson claims her priority is affordability, but on her watch,  the cost of fertilizer and diesel is skyrocketing for Iowa farmers at the worst possible time. With farmers getting ready for planting season, high fertilizer and diesel prices could send many farms into insolvency.

Ashley Hinson is telling Iowans she’s focused on lowering costs as she continues taking votes in DC that are responsible for jacking them in the first place,” said Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson Drew Myers. “Despite her rhetoric, the reality for many Iowans, especially farmers right now, is that prices are even higher than before because of her failing record that puts politics ahead of Iowa.

Lance Lillibridge, Vinton farmer and member of the Iowa Corn Growers Association:

  • “We have to plan a crop. Just plain and simple. That’s what has to happen. Is less fertilizer going to be used? Absolutely. […] A lot of guys have just said, I’m done. We’re going to quit. They’re hanging it up. There are sales everywhere, lots and lots of farm sales. Financially, it’s causing a lot of mental health problems.”

Larry Buss, Harrison County farmer:

  • “Now, if this stays longer and longer and longer, and we’ve got to start buying fertilizer, that’ll be higher; we’ve got to start buying fuel, that is higher.”

Brad Feckers, Shell Rock corn and soybean farmer:

  • “If nitrogen doesn’t come down, we might switch more acres to beans.”

Joe Sinclair, president of Iowa farm retailer Quality Ag Services:

  • “Farmers are going to aim lower and spend less”
