On the 5th Day of Decline, the Iowa GOP Gave Us… The Worst State Economy in the U.S.
DES MOINES, IA – On the fifth day of Christmas, Iowans didn’t receive five golden rings. Instead, Republicans gifted Iowans the worst state economy in the U.S.
The ranking was based on economic activity, economic health, and innovation potential in each state.
A separate survey by Creighton University of bank CEOs in rural areas of the Midwest found that Iowa’s economy has dropped to its lowest level since May of 2020.
The Mid-America Mainstreet Index also showed farm equipment sales declined for 26 straight months.
Ernie Goss, the Creighton University Economist that conducts the survey, told Radio Iowa: “It was not good news for the month of October and certainly looking ahead, the outlook is also negative for these bank CEOs in looking at the farm economy… We’re seeing below break-even income, cash flow for farmers that depend heavily on grain, that is.”
As a result, Iowa workers have been feeling the pinch of a bad economy. Nearly 300 John Deere workers in Ankeny, Waterloo, Davenport and Ottumwa have been laid off this year. Wells Fargo has laid off more than 1,300 people since April of 2022. Earlier this week, it was announced 144 Iowa workers will lose their jobs when four manufacturing plants in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, North Liberty and Davenport.
For hard-working Iowans, jobs are lagging, wages are low, and families are struggling to get ahead. We can’t keep heading down this path.
