Trump’s New MAGA: Make Argentina Great Again
As Iowa farmers lose their markets and the US Government bails out Argentina, Iowa’s congressional delegation is silent
DES MOINES – Instead of helping Iowa farmers who are in trouble, the U.S. Government is busy bailing out Argentina with 40 billion dollars of taxpayer money at their expense.
Reminder: Iowa’s soybean farmers’ main competitor is Argentina. Argentina took over the massive Chinese market after Trump’s trade war caused China to look for business elsewhere. Trump is quite literally helping Argentine farmers at the expense of American farmers, and Iowa soybean growers are going to pay the price.
As if throwing soybean farmers under the bus isn’t enough, Trump announced yesterday that he also wants to mass-import Argentine beef.
Bryan Whaley, CEO of Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, called Trump’s new plan “concerning.”
“President Trump’s recent remarks about potentially importing Argentinian beef are concerning for U.S. cattle producers, and the little detail that accompanied those comments has created volatility in the market,” Whaley said. “What we know is that consumer demand for the high-quality beef raised by U.S. producers has remained strong, despite the increased costs caused by drought, border closures, and high input costs to producers.”
Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President Brent Johnson said the cattle market, where producers have positive returns on their livestock, was one of the “few bright spots in Iowa’s ag economy” amid “widespread depressed ag markets.”
“We encourage the administration to resist actions that negatively impact the cattle farmers in Iowa and domestic beef production,” Johnson said.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall said: “NCBA’s family farmers and ranchers have numerous concerns with importing more Argentinian beef to lower prices for consumers. This plan only creates chaos at a critical time of the year for American cattle producers, while doing nothing to lower grocery store prices.”
Iowa Senator Joni Ernst said Trump should “put America first.”
Senator Chuck Grassley has also spoken out about Trump’s terrible plan to bail out Argentine farmers.
Meanwhile, Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn have all stayed silent on Trump’s plans that leave Iowa farmers in the dust.
“Do Feenstra, Hinson, Nunn, and Miller-Meeks agree with Trump’s new agenda to bail out Argentina while leaving Iowa’s soybean and cattle farmers out in the cold? Trump claims to love American farmers, but his actions tell the opposite story. Do they stand with American farmers, or do they stand with Trump and his foreign favorites?” IDP Chair Rita Hart said. “Iowa’s agricultural economy is in a downturn. Instead of fighting for relief, Iowa’s Republican congressional delegation is standing idly by while taxpayer dollars are sent to another country. We need representatives who will put Iowa farmers first.”
