Iowa Republicans to Attend Joni Ernst’s Republican Fundraiser, Continue Vacation During Shutdown
While Iowa farmers continue to struggle and National Guardsmen work without pay, Representatives Feenstra, Miller-Meeks, Nunn, and Hinson to take another week off
Des Moines – The federal government has been in shutdown for ten days and votes in the House have been canceled through at least Tuesday.
Instead of getting to work to help Iowa farmers, getting our deployed National Guardsmen a paycheck, and getting a deal to address skyrocketing insurance premiums, Iowa Representatives Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn have been attending Republican fundraisers. Hinson was even spotted on a private island with $500+ per-night hotel rooms.
This weekend, they’ll be at Joni Ernst’s annual Roast & Ride fundraiser. Iowans will be the ones getting roasted as Republicans enjoy the ride.
Meanwhile, other Republicans are trying to strike a deal in DC. Eleven Republicans have endorsed legislation that extends the Affordable Care Act credits for another year, but Iowa Republicans are refusing to sign.
Even Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis said that members of the House should get back to work.
“I think you got to be here. When I was Speaker of the House [in NC] we eliminated all days off, except for the actual holiday,” Tillis said. “Get in, do your work, go home. I think they should be here.”
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has also weighed in on the shutdown, saying that “Not a single Republican in leadership talked to us about this or has given us a plan to help Americans deal with their health insurance premiums DOUBLING!!!”
Iowa Republicans, however, seem content to leave tens of thousands of Iowans with skyrocketing health insurance premiums.
“Randy Feenstra, Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn are treating this shutdown like a vacation,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Why can’t Iowa’s representatives show some Iowa work ethic instead of spending the weekend at Joni Ernst’s Republican fundraiser? They should be working with their Republican colleagues to find a deal to open the government and prevent a spike in Iowans’ healthcare premiums. Don’t they think Iowans are paying attention?”
