Iowa Representatives Flounder in Attempts to Defend Republican Budget Law

No matter what they do or say, they can’t escape the reality that the law is bad for Iowans

Des Moines – The budget law passed last month is a bad deal for all Iowans. It cuts our clean energy tax credits, which will result in higher electricity bills across the state. It guts Medicaid and food stamps, programs that hundreds of thousands of Iowa children and families rely on. And it adds trillions to the deficit, weighing our economy down for decades to come.

Our Republican leaders know this. It’s why they’re trying so hard, and failing so miserably, to distract us from this fact.

Zach Nunn, unable to convince Iowans with his ideas or leadership, has resorted to using taxpayer money to make an ad promoting himself and the budget law. He never mentions the devastating cuts to Medicaid and food stamps he voted to pass. Nunn has also refused to host any public town halls and indicated this week he has no interest in holding a public town hall in the future.

Mariannette Miller-Meeks recently refused to talk to a constituent at the state fair because they wanted to discuss her vote to cut Medicaid, which was included in the budget law Miller-Meeks supported. Miller-Meeks’ lack of accountability is in stark contrast with this interview, in which she said she was proud of the Medicaid cuts she voted to pass“We’ve done good things that I’m not shying away from.”

Joni Ernst had her infamous, “Well, we all are going to die” moment at a town hall earlier this year while attempting to brush aside a constituent’s concerns about Medicaid cuts.

“No matter what our Republican leaders do, they can’t hide that this budget law is bad for Iowans,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Iowa Republicans who voted for the Medicaid and food stamps cuts included in the budget law all cave when put under pressure from the citizens they’re supposed to represent. Iowans have been betrayed to the point that our elected leaders won’t even face their voters. Come 2026, Iowans will remember this.”
