Republican Don Bacon Says Iowa is in a ‘Recession Economy’

Both Iowa and Nebraska are suffering under Trump’s disastrous trade policies

Des Moines – Unfortunately for Iowa Republicans, their fellow party member from Nebraska, Don Bacon, has spilled the beans on how poorly Iowa’s economy is holding up under their leadership.

While talking trade on a podcast this weekend, Rep. Bacon stated: “Nebraska is an export state, one of the biggest export states in the country, and tariff war is not good for us. And we’re seeing it. The economy in Nebraska constricted by 6% … a lot of this is because we’re agricultural-dependent state, so is Iowa, and they’re having the same numbers. And so what we’re seeing is basically a recession economy in Nebraska and Iowa right now.”

Evidence of Iowa’s weakening economy is growing. Iowa ranks 49th in economic growth, and the U.S.’ growing agricultural trade deficit is helping Iowa’s own struggling ag industry. Iowa is also 48th in personal income growth, and Iowans are taking on medical debt faster than any other state.

“As Nebraska Republican Don Bacon said, Iowa’s economy is in rough shape thanks to Republican leadership in Des Moines and DC,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “Iowa is 49th in the nation in economic growth, 48th in personal income growth, our agriculture industry is struggling, and Iowans are taking on medical debt faster than any other state. Iowans are seeing firsthand how badly Kim Reynolds and her clique of insider Republicans have failed them. It’s time for change.”
