Miller-Meeks Attempts to Run From Disastrous Health Care Record During A Global Pandemic
Miller-Meeks’ long record of undermining access to affordable health care would have exacerbated the COVID-19 crisis
DES MOINES — State Sen. Marianette Miller-Meeks is desperately trying to outrun her failed health care record in a new ad, but the facts speak for themselves. Over the course of her three failed campaigns, Miller-Meeks has supported repealing the ACA and eliminating guaranteed Medicare coverage for seniors. She’s voted for Medicaid work requirements and supported Iowa’s botched privatized Medicaid program. It’s clear that in Congress, Miller-Meeks’ attacks on health care would be even more disastrous for Iowans.
Miller-Meeks’ record of failing to protect Iowans’ health is nothing new. See for yourself:
Since 2014, Miller-Meeks has supported repealing the ACA. Even in a global pandemic, Miller-Meeks refuses to denounce the GOP-backed lawsuit to dismantle the national health care system.
If Miller-Meeks gets her way, 227,000 Iowans could lose their health coverage — on top of threatening protections for the 1.3 million Iowans with a pre-existing condition.
Miller-Meeks supported radical changes to turn Medicare into a voucher system that could end guaranteed coverage for the more than 605,000 Iowans who rely on the essential program.
As the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading across the U.S., State Sen. Miller-Meeks voted to implement Medicaid work requirements that undermine Iowans’ access to health care during a recession.
In 2016, State Sen. Miller-Meeks kept the door open for privatized Medicaid, a detrimental policy that has made care more difficult to access and lowered the quality.
Meanwhile, Miller-Meeks has taken over $240,000 from the health industry since she began campaigning for Congress in 2008 — leaving Iowans to question who Miller-Meeks is really working for.
“State Sen. Miller-Meeks runs from every mention of her failed health care record because if she had her way, hundreds of thousands of Iowans would be without care,” said Iowa Democratic Party spokesperson Samantha Kennedy. “Even during a global pandemic, she refuses to break with the Washington Republicans that are currently in court to repeal the ACA entirely. Whether she’s scared to stand up to the D.C. establishment or the health industry she’s taken $240,000 from, it’s clear Iowans can’t afford Miller-Meeks in Congress.”
