LOSING GROUND: Steve King’s Support in the Fourth District is Starting to Crack

Winnebago County Farm Bureau Refuses to Endorse King Over His Record on Agriculture.
A month out from election day, signs are emerging in Iowa’s 4th district that Congressman King’s historically strong support is quickly slipping away.

Just yesterday, the Winnebago County Farm Bureau refused to endorse Congressman King and published a devastating letter explaining why. The simple answer: King chooses partisanship over the best interests of Iowa farmers every chance he gets.

STORM LAKE PILOT TRIBUNE: [LTE] Why one county Farm Bureau refuses to endorse Steve King
“When the EPA was attacking ethanol, their champion was Ted Cruz. King hosted Ted Cruz in Iowa for a pheasant hunt, and endorsed him in the 2016 Iowa Caucus. There’s a wolf at the Iowa Farmer’s door…and King invited it in.

Trade Wars initiated by President Trump have hit District 4…Ethanol and ethanol biproducts export numbers have dropped, worsening margins. President Trump campaigned on a trade war and King has supported him.”

Earlier this week, multiple stories popped about how King’s traditional base is starting to abandon him as he drifts further and further from their Iowa values.

THINK PROGRESS: Iowa Republicans are getting tired of Steve King’s racist, offensive rhetoric
“With King up for re-election in November, both Democrats and Republicans have begun voicing their frustrations — both over the fact that King has been largely missing in action when it comes to visiting the district or carrying concerns back to Washington, and with his racist and xenophobic rhetoric.”

To cap off Congressman King’s terrible week of bleeding support, while he ducked the opportunity to talk to a major newspaper that covers his district, his opponent made the front page for out-hustling King:

DES MOINES REGISTER: Is Rep. Steve King in trouble? Democrat J.D. Scholten bets hustle, grit, are keys to upset
“Scholten is relentlessly campaigning and his supporters are betting his hustle and grit can lead to a long-shot upset. The former professional baseball pitcher has raised and spent more campaign cash than King has and, as of this summer, had more cash left to spend than did the incumbent.”

“As a congressman, Scholten promises better representation for Iowa workers and farmers. He supports a public option for health care, lower tuition costs for college students, high-speed Internet service for every rural community, and a tax code that emphasizes the middle class.”

“It’s no surprise the people of the Fourth District are getting tired of their do-nothing Congressman – he can’t even point to one major legislative accomplishment over the last 16 years to justify yet another 2 years in Congress. Maybe that’s why he’s so afraid to debate his opponent or hold any public events in his district,” said Iowa Democratic Party Spokesperson Tess Seger.

“The bottom line here is one citizen is working like crazy to represent his community, and one congressman is hoping to coast his way to another two years of a taxpayer-funded salary to sit and tweet in Washington D.C. We’ll see who the voters pick in November.”
