Reynolds Fails to Act for Rural Communities

As Governor Kim Reynolds heads through Western Iowa today, the Iowa Democratic Party is reminding rural voters that she has yet to take action on the Trump Tariffs endangering our farm economy, the heart of rural Iowa.

Infuriated by Donald Trump’s stunt, China is considering a tariff on soybeans. Iowa is the second largest producer of soybeans in the country. Iowa leads the nation in ethanol production, and China is going to raise its tariff on ethanol to 45%. As the largest producer of pork in the nation, Iowa will get hit the hardest by China’s 25% retaliatory tariff on pork.

When asked about it at her press conference on Monday, the closest Reynolds got to an answer on what she was going to do about the Trump Tariffs was saying that she was in daily communication with her person in DC who talks to the Iowa Congressional delegation.

Besides that, she rambled about how she knew the tariffs were a problem, which begs the question: why isn’t she doing more to stop them?

Governor Reynolds has touted her supposedly close relationship with the White House throughout her tenure. However, from her own comments it appears that she has to go through her middle man to the Iowa Congressional delegation to even talk about the impact of these tariffs.

“The Trump Tariffs will cripple Iowa’s Agricultural economy, but we can’t get a straight answer from the Governor on what she’s doing about it. If Governor Reynolds has ‘unprecedented’ access to the White House, she should be using it to save rural Iowa. Either she doesn’t have the access her political photo ops would suggest, or she can’t use it to advocate for Iowa – at which point, Iowans have to ask: what’s the purpose of keeping her in office?” said Iowa Democratic Party Spokesperson Tess Seger.
